The week before your first amateur tournament, you will feel ready. You've been practising. Your swing feels solid. You've looked up the course on Google Maps. You've told yourself you're going to treat it "like any other round" — casual, relaxed, just enjoying the game.
Then you stand on the first tee with a group of strangers watching, your heart rate at approximately the same level as if you'd just sprinted up a flight of stairs, and everything you thought you knew about your swing evaporates. This is normal. This is what tournament golf actually feels like. And the sooner you accept that instead of fighting it, the better you are going to play.
The Week Before: Prepare Honestly, Not Obsessively
There is a version of tournament prep that makes you worse. It involves hitting 300 balls the day before the event, watching three hours of swing videos the night before, and spending the morning of the round tinkering with a technical thought that you read about at 11pm and now can't get out of your head. This is the path to disaster.
Under pressure, you will forget your proper golf swing mechanics — that's not a failure, that's physiology. The adrenaline kicks in, fine motor control drops, and suddenly the five-move checklist you've been rehearsing becomes inaccessible. In the days before the tournament, keep things calm and purposeful:

The first tee of a tournament is its own psychological beast. Your playing partners are strangers. There may be people watching. The tee markers look somehow further apart than usual. You have been thinking about this moment for a week.
Here is the only useful thing you can do: make the target smaller in your mind. Don't try to hit a perfect drive. Pick the biggest, safest landing area you can see — the widest part of the fairway, or even the first cut if the fairway is tight — and commit to swinging at that, not at some idealised shot shape you've been imagining. Playing the Round: Manage, Don't Gamble
Competitive golf rewards patience and punishes impatience. The players who blow up in amateur tournaments are almost never the ones who were outplayed — they are the ones who made one bad decision after a bogey and suddenly started gambling on recovery shots that needed tour-level execution.
Make these rules non-negotiable for your first tournament:
- Play the gear that fits your game. If you've found the best golf ball for slow swing speed — something in the 70–85 compression range that you trust and have practised with — play it. Don't switch to a Tour Pro V because it feels like the right move for a competition. The ball you trust is always the right ball, regardless of what anyone else in your group is playing.
- Bogey is not a disaster. In your first tournament, your only goal should be finishing. Making a bogey and moving on cleanly is a skill. Making a bogey, getting frustrated, forcing a hero shot on the next hole, making a double, and then completely coming apart is what derails rounds. Accept the bogey. Write it down. Move to the next tee.
- Short game over long game. Under pressure, your chipping and putting will decide your score more than any other factor. Lay up to comfortable distances. Get the ball on the green. Two-putt and move on. This is not exciting golf. It is effective golf — and the difference matters enormously in your first competitive round.
- Stay in the present shot. Every time you start thinking about your total score, or how you're tracking against your handicap, or whether you can birdie the last three holes to save the round — stop. You are on whichever hole you are on. That is the only hole that exists right now.
When It Goes Wrong (And It Will)
Something will go wrong. You will hit a shot you can't believe you hit. You will three-putt from six feet. You will make a decision that, in retrospect, was obviously wrong. This is tournament golf at every level — the professionals experience the same thing, they are just faster at resetting.
The reset is a skill you can practise. It goes like this: you have until you reach your next shot to feel whatever you need to feel about the previous one. Annoyed, frustrated, embarrassed — all of it is fine and all of it is normal. Once you arrive at your ball, those feelings go in a box. You assess the situation in front of you. You make the best decision available. You execute.
That's the whole mental game. Not zen detachment. Not robotic indifference. Just a clear line between what happened and what's happening now.
After the Round: The Only Question Worth Asking
When it's done — sign your card, shake hands, head to the clubhouse — give yourself permission to feel whatever the round deserves. If it went well, enjoy it. If it didn't, let yourself be honest about it for a while. And then, when you are ready, ask the one question that separates golfers who keep improving from golfers who plateau: what was the real pattern today?
Not the unlucky bounces. Not the putts that lip out. The actual pattern — the fairways you didn't find, the decisions you made under pressure, the moments where your process broke down. Write it down. It is data. Use it.
Your first tournament will not be your best round of golf. It almost certainly won't be. But if you approach it honestly — prepare without obsessing, warm up without tinkering, play without gambling, reset without drama — it will teach you more about your game in four hours than four months of casual rounds.
That's what raw golf is. Showing up, playing what's in front of you, and being honest enough with yourself to learn from it.
